Having checked all of my memory I found that one of my RAM sticks,
capable of being 1Mb was actually 256 Kb. When I replaced that most of
my problems went away. Firefox only crashes about once a month now.

The fault seems to be with dpkg; gzip and corrupt compressed data are regular
messages on my box.
@SignedAdam -I have the same vid card and the same problem on U12.04LTS.
Did you find a fix or workaround?

Whenever I shift or AltGr in order to select from that set, the layout
reverts from azerty to qwerty and cannot be restored to azerty until
restarted.
When selecting AT, zero, closing square bracket, o, plus, closing
suare bracket, etc. requiring Shift or AltGr the qwerty
associated with bug 1176254, circumstances the same - namely boot-repair
editing grub to set acpi off in order to find usb storage - which it did
whilst losing the wifi

process running - in order to try to find my usb storage, which It did,
