gnome apps won't start via remote desktop

Public bug reported:
VNC server running on Ubuntu 10.10.
Connection to VNC server succeeds.
Starting console window from menu (gnome-terminal) does not bring up window.
This command silently times out.
When starting "gnome-terminal" from xterm, the followin error message
occurs:
