This sounds like the same symptoms as bug #546678. Do you guys still get
the same issues if you 'sudo apt-get purge gnome-screensaver' ?
Another workaround was to run 'xgamma -gamma 1.0' when the black screen

rebooting on linux-image-2.6.34-020634rc5-generic, the problem goes away

Deven, we should probably switch this discussion to the other bug. But
yes it is a non-trivial workaround that requires blindly typing the
user's password, starting a terminal and then running the xgamma command
- hence the suggestion to use a keyboard shortcut; but it's still better
than restartin
workaround from upstream bug: running "xgamma -gamma 1.0" fixes the
display.
so to ease the pain, go to System->Preferences->Keyboard shortcuts, and
add a custom entry that executes this command for each user.
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace is a good one for the nostalgic.

I tried with xorg-edger's ppa
(2:2.9.0+git20091026.10946118-0ubuntu0tormod) and I get the same error.
However, rollbacking to xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.4 resolves the issue
(ppa: http://ppa.launchpad.net/siretart/ppa/ubuntu).

Yes I'm able to reproduce in karmic alpha 6 + all updates. Trying to
launch it from the shell of the second session I get a similar message:
