Ok, I did some testing.
Restarting geeqie does NOT fix it (tried 10+ times)
Relogging (and thus restarting X and all desktop daemons) does NOT fix it
(tried 10+ times)
Rebooting DOES fix it (problem disappeared after first try)

It reappeared! Only this time, I did not change ANY installed package!

to reboot. The problem consistently remained there.
Supposedly after my post #4, I upgraded the following. None seems
related to geeqie to me (correct me if I'm wrong).
