For what it's worth, I was having similar problems, and had almost
concluded it was time to change an admittedly old computer (9-10 years).
I had decided it was the graphics card overheating. As a last ditch
attempt, I took the card out and gave it a thorough clean. This was a
good month ago and I'
Further update: a fresh install of Thunderbird via Synaptics seems to
have sorted things out. CPU is now normal.

No, my Thunderbird overconsumed CPU, even when the indexer was turned off, the
folders compacted and extensions removed. The bug appears to be tied to the
ubuntu-specific version of tbird.
Point taken, for comment #7... it works for me, in any case.

Last update: downloading tbird 3.1.4 for linux from the mozilla tbird

Well, I have reverted to tbird 2.0.0.24, available on the tbird website, after
some searching. (A 3.0 version was also available, but that kept crashing...)
This is a little disappointing, however, for a new version of Ubuntu and I hope
it will be fixed soon.
(Reversion is simple enough: sudo rm
Same here, after the update via the web to 10.10, Thunderbird is taking
about 50% of CPU. I've disabled extensions and removed/ reinstalled
Thunderbird... Can I revert to the previous version?

In response to Stephane T, when you run "killall soffice.bin", that
knocks out the quickstarter. This could be tied up to the system
shutdown button with something like "killall soffice.bin && shutdown

Update: oddly enough, I uninstalled Lightning 0.9 via Synaptics, and
then activated Lightning 1.0 via the add-ons menu item in Thunderbird.
I've been using it for a day or so since, and have had no more crashes.

I added Lightning 1 to Thunderbird 3 on Ubuntu 10.04, but it seems to
lead to Thunderbird hanging, notably when closing the Lightning tab, or
switching between tabs (via Ctrl Tab). Has anyone else noticed this, and
is there a known fix?
