I have the same issue with a single display.
- Ubuntu 12.04.4 32-bit
- "Saucy" HWE stack
- 7300GT
- Drivers 304.88
In my case the solution was to downgrade nvidia-settings back to 304.88.
Should I issue a new bug report?

So far, Doug's fix works flawlessly, with no side effects (Precise
32-bit + xserver-xorg-lts-raring + 7300GT + Forceware 304.88).

In my case (7300GT + drivers 304.64) the problem is also Unity-related
and vanishes once I turn it off.

Both plugins work perfectly for me. In the case of Show Desktop it's
just a question of setting it to start after Unity, using Gconf Editor.

No, it's caused by Compiz 0.9.8. Disabling it, or switching to Metacity,
solves the problem.

Really, it's VERY embarrassing and dangerous. If it spreads, it can hurt
the reputation of Ubuntu - and even Linux as a whole -really badly.
Personally, I would block it not only completely, but also permanently,
to make the system 101% family-safe.
