Thanks for answer #23, it solved my problem.
The problem occured only by VLC itself and the KDE Phonon VLC module. So
I suspect that VLC is doing something a little bit different than most
other audio backends. Maybe the chunk size VLC uses or the timing of
VLC.

I haven't got the system this happened anymore.
But at least for Oneiric I cant't confirm this problem: After the
Recovery Menu is shown the menu is overwritten by some console messages.
But by arrow up/down at least the choices can be made visible again and
resuming booting works.

As soon as Plymouth starts the color depth is set to a low value (I
guess 8 bit). This persists when kdm starts and also after logging in
into KDE.
Being logged in I can enable KDE desktop effects but all modules and

anymore after usage of the kde printer configuration. Okular didn't show
a message but Acrobat Reader showed the already known "Bad job-sheets
value".

Well I'm not sure if this is really a bug... Of course it uses some more
ink than just a simple "your printer works"-page. But on the other hand
you can see everything relevant: How big the crop at the edges is and
if colors are printed correctly (no tint).

Replacing the "-f hocr" option for cuneiform by "-f smarttext" solved
this. (Instead of "smarttext" "text" should work, too. But smarttext is
probably better in most cases.)

I'm pretty sure that I didn't have this problem on 9.04 final anymore.
But maybe the ksplahx theme simply hasn't changed for some time...
Updating to KDE 4.5 Beta (fromm Kubuntu PPA Beta) was successfull, too.
So I guess this bug can be closed for now.

Installing the latest driver (from 26th Mai I think) solved this
problem for me. So I guess a recent version of the driver should be
included to Ubuntu.
