I have the same problem, it's been present since the first Hardy alpha all the way through to 8.04 LTS. Drive worked normally under Gutsy. The only drive on my single IDE channel is a BenQ EW-164B (same as DW-1640), the drive is visible in /dev/disk/by-id as ata-BENQ_DVD_DD_EW164B_J95B1U053C2504
