Tried going back to S13 for gdmand the old problem came back, long
delays before the desktop comes up and gdmsetup can't run. Spash screen
reverts to default as well.
Back to S21 and everything is normal.
Something between S13 and S20 has to run before GDM, and why is there no
socket when GDM
Well I am "happy" with the workaround but it bugs me why the problem
only seemed to affect 3 or 4 people. Looking at the init scripts for
Dapper and Edgy, I did notice that dbus runs from an s20 script in Edgy,
while it is s12 in Dapper. GDM runs with s13 in both cases ( except as I
changed it to
Never did try to figure it out. I changed S13gdm to S21gdm and it
worked well, so obviously something in between has to run first ?

I have since realized that this is not a Firefox problem, it's an XORG
problem. The static lines appear when scrolling most applications. Maybe
just the mga driver ?

This all looks so familar. The gdmgreeter not connecting, and in my case
gdmsetup also emulates the greeter and won't /can't connect. Nobody

Yes. Nothing - no splash but no Xserver errors either. I have other problems
now caused by BUM which I think shoud be taken out of
Usplash hasn't worked here for two weeks. I guess we have to wait for
final release.

Actually it's a two part crash which is random. I click on properties,
an error box pops up saying Gstreamer has suffered an internal error,

With latest updates to Edgy (15-9-2006) USPLASH is gone. System
complains it can't find a usable screen for 640x480. Screen init fails.
String of code. But system eventually boots anyway.

I have 2 icons on the screen for hda3...my dapper partition which Edgy mounts
on boot, One is called hda3, the other hda3(2). This all comes after the
installer insisted my hd was a scsi drive when it's really an IDE. That has
