I have a D945GCLF2 with Ubuntu 8.10.
I had fan control enabled too, and it led to freezes when load was high.
I have now disabled automatic fan control and I'll see how it goes.

I have exactly the same problem. I am using an Samsung CD writer. My
entire machine more or less freezes on the drive not ready for command
messages.
