As you may have guessed from the date I opened the bug, that was seven years
ago. I no longer have the machine that was affected by this problem.
However, I do remember the sound working in later Ubuntu versions. So I
guess... fix released?

Hi,
I had a look at the patch trying to understand where the bug was. it
seems that there was a typo in preferences.py that set autosavee instead
of autosave and that would not re-enable autosave after it had been
disabled.
I've taken this part of the patch and commited it to Revision 212 of
trun
it's fixed in trunk for quite a while now, however we haven't made any
release since then.
The current translations situation is blocking new releases for now.
