After some more tinkering I've developed a reliable workaround to this
issue. The tricky part seems to be getting the ice1712 driver to unload
in the short time window between killing pulseaudio and when pulseaudio
automatically restarts. I am still a linux novice so I am certain that

I have perfectly fine sound playback from my Audiophile 2496 card on
initial boot, but every time without fail when I suspend I have no audio
upon resuming. When sound is gone after resume, activity can still be
seen on the VU meters of envy24control when a sound is played.
With all due respect, this feature works natively in google chat. see
the attached screenshot. if they use the same protocol, it should be
available.

I can't do a backtrace because I'm getting dependency errors when trying to
install the dbgsym packages listed on the wiki...I may need someone to help
me walk through it. Is there a place I could get live support (IM, IRC,
etc) with the dependency problem so that I can fix the crash problem? I
