I added the following to the update-script:
export PATH=$PATH:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/sbin
export TERM=linux
This seems to be working, but to confirm, I'll have to wait for another
update.

How is this invalid, if you have to do a restart without being told? it
worked without any problems in 8.10 and now it does not like it's
supposed to. If you are required to restart, you should at least get a
hint for that, let alone enabling it to work without a restart.

Same here, on a hardy vServer. Updates are done automatically via a
cronjob, but print out the debconf error messages.

Ah something else (sry for double post):
I tried to connect to the printer inside my Windows VM (Virtualbox), but no
avail. So I tried to have a look at cups again and noticed it would'nt work
anymore. And I have a 64bit version of ubuntu.
But don't know if these are in any way related.

Yes, this seems to be a duplicate, sry about that. Made a quick search, but
didn't find the other bugs back then.
Anyway, I purged samba and cups, without any result. I can reproduce the
bug by installing libpam-smbpass again.

Update: The workaround with recovery console and removing libpam-smbpass
worked, I was able to boot normally again.

This is a HUGE bug, it's totally disturbing my work... Everything using
nautilus or just the "open file" dialog seems to be affected and I have
to work on a distant server. Back to the shell it seems... Hope there is
a fix soon!
