I figured out why even rolling back to the older version of fglrx didn't
work for me: looks like my card is fried, at least the 3D functions do
not seem to work at all. From the scorching around the GPU area, it
looks like it massively overheated (it is a passively-cooled X1300). Not

I can confirm this on Mythbuntu Intrepid. Rescue boot & xfix works for
me but as soon as I use Jockey to load the fglrx driver, the system will
hang at the next reboot before loading GDM with a black screen, totally
unresponsive system and my monitor telling me it detected an unsupported
video mode
Crash happens at startup with up to date Jaunty. No problems after that.
I can use the applet fine.

superuser and therefore shouldn't tell people to change their menus.
BTW, I am not affected by this bug in Intrepid. Apart from bug #286424,
nvidia-settings started from the Administration menu (without gksu)

It's great that we contacted upstream but is there nothing else we can
do about this? Intrepid effectively ships with a broken config tool for
NVIDIA cards because of this and I doubt many unsophisticated users will

Bug #292383 is a dupe of this. Dell XPS m1330 same symptoms as described
here, going to 160x120 or 176x144 and manually shutting down and
restarting works. Skype and Ekiga work without problems.

While I can see the point about this being VMware's problem, is there
