The patch from my previous post is only needed for rules generated by "old"
(e.g. 7.10) 75-persistent-net.rules.
The latest from hardy generates rules which contain ATTR{type}=="1" which won't
match the wmaster device.
But for people who upgrade from 7.10 it might be a nice to have a cleaner

I think I nailed it
udev tries to rename the wmaster* device generated by mac80211. It should only
rename the real interface named wlan*.
By adding the following to /etc/udev/rules.d/05-options.rules the wmaster*
devices will be ignored and renaming works correctly again... ( so no boot

if old persistent rules are present for the wireless card. Removing

In hardy the ipw3945 driver is replaced by iwl3945, but the ucode for
ipw3945 is still in the linux-ubuntu-modules package. I think this
should be removed.
