I should add that I searched both Ubuntu and Debian bug archives and
could find no reference to either this problem or the kernel bug ID.
The problem manifests with logs like:
ide-cd: cmd 0x3 timed out
hdc: lost interrupt
After this occurs the IDE bus is totally hung until a machine reset.
