Cannot contribute much because the desktop is completely blank (except
for the background) and a black bar at the top. There is no "Activities"
control. Even worse, the mouse pointer is the spinning Ubuntu disk. I
can click on the date, which is right.

I reimaged my install stick, then tried the installation (install USB ->
destination USB) on a bigger and faster computer. It worked fine the second
time.
