Got bit by this, too; however, in my case it's adding "ldap" to the
hosts line that got me into trouble.

Forgot to mention I have an amd64 platform updated from 9.04.
In Synaptic, all package repositories were enabled.
But I went further; from the previous error message, I ran:

Karmic fully updated on Asus EeePC 701 4G, 800x480; exact same
observations as Nicolas M (comment #37). My system is in French, if that
can make any difference.
