I had the same problem after upgrade to 20.04
Setting / Sound / Output / Test produced no sound.
Pressing the test button resulted in an error in syslog:
gnome-control-c: Failed to play sound: No such driver
libcanberra-pulse was missing:
apt search libcanberra
libcanberra-pulse/focal 0.30-7ub
To consolidate the workaround to this ticket:
sudo apt purge ttf-mscorefonts-installer
wget
http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/contrib/m/msttcorefonts/ttf-mscorefonts-installer_3.7_all.deb
-P ~/Downloads
sudo apt install ~/Downloads/ttf-mscorefonts-installer_3.7_all.deb
This resolved the issu
Reinstalling the ca-certificates did not work for me.
Only removing dbus-user-session works around the problem for me.

It turns out the workaround does resolve the long pause, but does not
result in correct operation. Chrome has chrome sync not functioning, and
gnome-encfs mounts fail unless manually mounted using gnome-encfs-
manager

I can replicate this problem on 16.04.3 after upgrade from 16.04.2.

I have this problem on a T60p as well, and the modset=0 hack resolved
it.
After significant research, I believe this problem is resolved upstream.
