This regression is just madness. Just as others have said, it is present
and annoying. Making it harder to set basic options like this in Linux
is what makes a lot of people choose Mac or Windows. Just saying.

Disregard the above post, except for the points about looking at patch
patterns in the affected kernels and that 2.6.32-21 did not have the
issue for me and GUmeR who posted in this bug report which seems to
cover the same issue:

The kernel version I am using at the moment is the standard Ubuntu build
of 2.6.32.22.
This error occurs about once a day during normal use, which for me

I have the same issue as well, except I have an ASUS laptop running
64bit Ubuntu with an ext4 partition. Would be glorious to see this
fixed, although it is hard to tell what has caused it to be broken.
