The workaround I found good at the time (see above) does not work with
lucid anymore.
After skimming through the xrandr-links in this bugreport I tried some
other workarounds.
This is what helps me under Kubuntu 10.04:
xrandr --output DP2 --mode 1920x1200
added as a desktop entry under systemse
I am finally able to print (@tomlaunch: hplip 3.19.2)!
My solution: I put my venerable G85 to pasture (the new ink cartridges did not
work either - this seems to be a hardware problem) and replaced it with an
Officejet Pro 8500.
Works now for all my PCs via Ethernet, printouts are better quali
lucid-updates

FWIW:
I have installed Kubuntu on this machine (typing from the fresh install) with
the ALTERNATE installer. I told the installer to format the partitions.
The machine has an ASUS A8V mobo (see lspci abvove). It has an old IDE drive in
it and a big, fast SAMSUNG SATA drive.

The latest kernel upgrade fixed my problem with my SD-card-reader (Bug
#53923) but disabled DRI.

85640) an encrypted root partition in feisty.
I can NOT mount it readonly (-> no checks on startup). My kernel line in
menu.list of grub is now changed to:
kernel /v
For me the workaorund WITHOUT my patch works finally.
Be very careful when/from where/what to include in the initrd!
I wish (already on the list) there were a setup option to encrypt the
filesystem like in Debian etch.
Notebooks without HD-encryption ( / is essential IMO ) are a desaster
waiting
what do you think of my patch in bug 85640 ?
this applies to feisty though and there might be changes in the init
procedures compared to edgy.
