problematic default file/directory permissions when VFAT drive connected

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: nautilus
The proper behavior I EXPECT:
When I hook up an external hard drive (or USB flash drive) with one big
VFAT partition (a VERY common thing), I want to see all
directories/folders having these default permissions:
drwxr-xr-x
...and all files to
With the dmask/fmask fix now applied in gdonf-editor, I've verified that
unison-gtk will properly sync files and folders back and forth to a vfat
drive. But the fix only works if all files and folders being synced
have permissions like "-rw-r--r--" and "drwxr-xr-x", respectively.
Plus, if there ar
Here are far-better alternative default vfat mount options for gnome
(this suggested fix has been copied from this related bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/118283)
Basically, instead of the vfat mount option "umask=022", you instead use
"dmask=022" and "fmask=133"

I've also added this suggested fix to bug 178154 (because it's gnome-
mount which is closer to the root of the problem than unison).

ceg, your suggestions sounds perfect. I've verified your fix. Here is
the procedure, for anyone else who wants to do this.
Within gconf-editor, I used the "Find" tool to search for "vfat"
(searching also in all key names and key values).
This returned the key "/system/storage/default_options/vf
I've come up with a simple, decent workaround to this problem that I'd
like to share. It won't help everyone in all cases, but it's a lot
better than nothing ;)
For months now I have been pondering how to easily transport, say,
important configuration files (in ~) from one Ubuntu computer to

Hi, I've managed to compile for myself a custom kernel (2.6.23.1, from source)
which worked where the stock kernel 2.6.22-14 would not. How did I do it? I
copied the latest stock kernel's config file (/boot/config-2.6.22-14-generic),
and used it as I configured my custom kernel

Thanks for the tip, faif, but it didn't work for me. Even with your

Please see submission ID 7dfd98bcd1ece98862ea33460bff5333 in the Ubuntu
Device database. I've just upgraded to Gutsy Gibbon.
Note: The problem is in one of these linux 2.6.22-related packages, I'm not
sure which, but these are the ones I have installed:
~$ dpkg -l|grep 2.6.
The "mask" that sets the permissions when making vfat files and
folders appear like they are posix-compliant should be adjustable
somewhere, that's the heart of the issue. Right now the mask used
causes problems, because it blindly makes all vfat files appear as
having executable bit set.

After looking at Wubi, I think my idea is a bit "cleaner". I say this
because when you use Wubi, the Ubuntu living inside a file in NTFS will
in time loose performance as it falls prey to that NTFS partition
becoming more fragmented.
Having said that, Wubi would probably be an easier solution to

The two feature requests above still stand (Nautilus converting UNC ->

There are deeper system implications for use case number 3: After
cloning a system, the UUIDs of the disk partitions will be different.
The partitions might be different: for example the root partition might
have been /dev/sda1 on the original machine, but on the cloned machine
it might be /dev/sda
Oh yeah, a third use case:
-imagine you work in the IT department of a large corporation that saves
time by cloning Ubuntu desktop machines: just after you've managed to
clone an Ubuntu machine, you want to hand it off to a new user. And
the freshly cloned machine needs to have a new hostname or

This is a feature request. It's a brand new thing that would probably
be a package of its own.
