Apparently this bug is not fixed yet. As Ubuntu 14.04 LTS will still be
shipping with Unity 7, I hope it will be fixed by then. Unfortunately I
don't have the necessary skills to do it myself. Thanks a lot in advance

The problem occurs at the moment.
I was logged in as 'duke' but logged out (via the session menu) and then logged
in as 'administrator'.
In the session menu both users have a check mark behind their names, even
though user 'duke' is no longer logged in.
I experience this problem on my desktop PC too from time to time. The
workaround from comment #4 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/1238410/comments/4) brings back the cursor.

That spat out a lot of options in the command line terminal. I didn't
change any of them and just closed the terminal after running the line
you gave me.
When I ran the Update Manager and hit "check", I thought we had it at
first. It showed a progress bar and said "loading software list", then

You are a genius. Now we're getting somewhere. That seemed to fix it;
I installed all of the updates (there were a TON of them).
Now, however, the update manager doesn't offer me the update to Ocelot.
Am I missing something simple? I've checked for updates several times
