I just upgraded to Ubuntu Karmic Koala, and I cannot get Empathy to save
my account settings. I have tried using the Import from Pidgin wizard
which has my accounts setup and is working fine. I have also tried
adding the accounts manually. But whe
I recently started getting this same error some time after I began
experimenting with making a bootable flash drive. I am only receiving
the first dialog though. Not the second. I do not receive any errors
when using the umount command in a terminal. Only when using the
graphical utility.

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala Alpha 5 today, and I can confirm
that this problem no longer exists. However, it only suspends if I
manually do it, or close the lid. I have configured it to go to sleep
after 10 minutes, but it does not go to sleep. It just turns off the
monitor.

Upgrading from Ubuntu 7.10 to 8.10 on my MT6705 Laptop, I discover that
when I try to have the laptop hibernate or sleep, it locks up and never
goes into the requested mode. If the laptop is unplugged the battery
runs down rather quickly.
