There's a recently issued security update for MySQL to updates
libmysqlclient18 mysql-common from V5.5.28 to V5.5.29
Any attempt to install that caused MariaDB to be removed from my system.

That's not a good title. What's the harm in upgrading this package to
the latest version, which works and provides something useful.
Just writing this off because v0.6.1 is obsolete doesn't really solve my
problem.

The current version was built before Twitter changed from Basic Auth to
Oauth. So it is 100% unusable.
You need to update it to the latest code base: python-twitter-0.8.2.
which includes all of the Oauth2 stuff.
Even the simplest python script:
