This is a deeper problem in Thunderbird.
The only thing that really solved it for me, was the QuoteAndComposeManager
(former RealBorders) addon:

In the addon settings, under the tab 'Fonts', select the option
'Stabilize predefined font'.

Since I currently don't have the time to re-try and install Karmic,
Lucid, or any other release, I suggest that the Ubuntu team will deviate
from the regular procedures, and will accept the findings of other
posters.

Hello,
In continue to tyee's message, I have renamed extensions.rdf, and it
indeed solved the problem.
Oddly enough, the original file and the new file, have the same
permissions.
System: Ubuntu Feisty on GNU/Linux
