PowerPlay is the power management interface used by the ATI drivers to
configure the power
settings on their GPUs. I should be able to do "aticonfig --set-powerstate 1"
to throttle the
GPU down to a low power mode.

I've seen the same problem. Running the kernel's 'make menuconfig' inside a
Konsole took over
5 seconds to draw!

I don't really have any detailed analysis at the moment, but from a pure user
experience POV, KDE is extremely painful to use in Gutsy w/o compiz enabled.
Redraws are taking forever and when
running multiple applications (konqueror, kterm, konversation, etc) this makes
