New Jaunty install with ATI RadeonHD 4830 using propriety drivers.
Xorg was running at 100% when trying to change any screen settings
(change resolution, enable compiz, etc)
RESOLVED by following the instructions here :
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1137576 to disable RandR
