Thanks for the reply.
In my case, the problem was probably due to the presence of
http://ppa.launchpad.net/francisbrwn9/kernels/ubuntu amongst the apt sources,
and I think that a wrong version (now removed) of the kernel was published
there.
If the problem persists in future releases, I'll add

Using kernel kernel 3.2.0-18.28-generic (no problems with 3.2.0-17 and
older) on Ubuntu 11.10 x86_64, the wifi device (Intel Corporation
Centrino Advanced-N 6200, iwlwifi module) and the networks are detected,
