After some disordered investigations.
It seems the i915 driver is borked, and if removed vesa fails to start since it
thinks the FBDEV is already taken.
Tried some proprietary nvidia drivers also but with no success.
nouveau kernel driver fails to be detected and does not get loaded properly.

Asus n56vz battery stat
Upgraded to AMI BIOS 217 with saucy, and the battery issues I've seen has
disappeared.
Battery is now charging correctly to full, not discharging when charger is
connected.
And the battery LED Seem to behave correctly now, previously I had the blinking
red all the time.
Keyboard lights can not
I have battery issues with the 56VZ, discharging during heavy use with the
charger connected. Everything is stock.
Never charges to max et.c.

Now everything seems to work, with your firmware package. Bug was most likely

I have the same issue on 10.04 Lucid. And have had this problem for a LONG time.
Why is the severity of this issue not raised previously. It REALLY annoying to
