Public bug reported:
When the --icmp-ipid option is used to set the identifier field in the
ICMP echo request, the corresponding echo reply packet is ignored. I
have verified this behavior with tcpdump -- the packets do indeed
arrive, but they are not recorded:
$ sudo hping3 -1 --icmp-ipid 256 8
** Patch added: "Patch to fix icmp.un.echo.id matching in recv_icmp()"

Joseph,
I'm not the OP, but I have the same problem. I ran the suggested 'sudo
apt-get' commands, but I still get the same fundamental error:
Unpacking linux-image-3.5.0-37-generic (from
.../linux-image-3.5.0-37-generic_3.5.0-37.58_i386.deb) ...
This kernel does not support a non-PAE CPU.

I'm running into a similar problem with Karmic and the 855GM chipset.
I'll try some of the suggested fixes and report more detailed debugging
output later. I started having the problem upon upgrading to Karmic.
When the freeze occurs, it's when an OpenGL application, like a
screensaver, starts up,
Another data point: I don't see the black line issue when I use the
daily Chromium build for Ubuntu.

I'm also experiencing this problem on many websites, including

Oops, upon further reflection I see I've posted this to an Ubuntu bug

I'm having the same (or a similar) problem running arch after moving a
mailing list from a CentOS 3.9 box to a Solaris 10 server. Having
copied the mbox file over, I run arch to update the archives, but I get
this exception:
