gedit won't exit and consum
i'm also stuck on this.
- installed java-5
- installed eclipse
-> eclipse ran fine
- installed java-6
- uninstalled java-5
-> eclipse from the menu gives: The custom VM you have chosen is not a valid
executable.
- uninstalled completely/reinstalled eclipse
-> same problem

similar behaviour after installing 8.04 beta into a parallels vm on macos:
changing the resolution garbles the screen.
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg gives Error inserting battery.

concerning mp995:
if i check with hdparm -i the default setting seems alright.
i just got confused by the output without -i in combination with the system
being on 99% iowait for hours after the installation. but that is probably
another problem (my guess is slocate).

problem is still in ubuntu 7.10.
funny that the 1st time i inserted the ubuntu dvd into the 2nd drive it
automatically offered to open the packet manager. it worked.
but it asked only once and after reboot i'm stuck with this bug.

i can confirm this (both panels missing after the two grey bars appear for a
second)
with the current xubuntu 7.10 desktop iso.
happens with cd boot and after installation and after 1st login. after that it
seems ok.
the machine is an mp995, 128mb, 400mhz, no network.
