Basically I removed all Japanese fonts listed as installed in Synaptic, and
then installed only these:
ttf-kochi-mincho-naga10
ttf-kochi-gothic-naga10
ttf-sazanami-gothic
ttf-sazanami-min
This problem has been resolved for me. I can't say which upgrade solved
it, but since reporting it and updating my system many times, the issue
no longer happens.

After upgrading and rebooting, I opened my plugin-free profile, randomly

Problem was solved by reverting the xorg driver as suggested by Eddie
Padilla above.
The trick to getting around the "startx" command problems that I had
reported earlier was to use ctrl+alt+F7 instead. For whatever reason,
that worked.

however, all of them seem to be performance issues such as slow
responsiveness or choppy video.
In my case, the problem is so severe that Jaunty is completely

I tried to use the update manager to upgrade from 8.10 to Jaunty 9.04
final release version (on April 27), and it did a partial upgrade and
aborted without much warning. It left my computer in an unstable state,

included, I simply restored a backed up version from about three months
ago.
It seems to work fine. I am currently enjoyed a working Wacom tablet

One more comment:
It turns out I do have a "plugdev" group. It was just not visible from
the Gnome User/Group manager GUI.
But still, this information has not revealed any solution.

I don't believe this is a hardware issue because:
1. We are talking about many devices.
2. All these devices worked as expected in Edgy.
At this point I have learned that /etc/udev/rules.d/10-wacom.rules has
been depreciated, so I've removed it. Not having the file has s

When I plug in any USB device (SD card reader, MP3 players, Bluetooth
dongle, Palm Pilot, etc...), and check the output of "dmesg", I can see
that the device is connected.
However, there is no way to actually use any of these devices.

MythTV backend is set to run as a background daemon in the session manager.
When logging in, it reports a crash.
Sometimes it successfully restarts. Sometimes it doesn't. I can't determine
what, if anything, decides which way it goes.
