This workaround doesn't work for me...
I have i386 architecture, so I changed the commands as follows:
wget
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glib2.0/2.48.2-0ubuntu3/+build/15131276/+files/libglib2.0-0_2.48.2-0ubuntu3_i386.deb
wget
http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/d/dpkg/dpkg_1.18.4
I just noticed that the linux image had been updated to 2.6.32-28-generic, but
there is no linux-alsa-driver-module available yet -- latest available version
is for 2.6.32-27-generic
I removed the the 2.6.32-28 linux image (reverted to 2.6.27) and sound is
working properly again.

Bill,
well, wouldn't you know but my machine locked again today -- 3 days uptime.
So I'm still nowhere.
How did you get your uptime up to 5 days?
Thanks,
Dave

Well, I spoke too soon.
After 3 days my gui is locked again. However, and this is a helpful
improvement, I can still SSH into the machine.
"top" shows Xorg consuming 100% of CPU.
"sudo service gdm stop" just waits indefinitely, never returning me to
the command line. Xorg remains at 100%. So
Hi Bill,
you still with us?
I found this article answered my issues (Bug #466937) completely:

I think we can mark this as solved.

this is a repeat of Bug #435011, but now against Karmic
I upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic a week ago. Since that time, I have not had
more than 5 hours of continuous uptime.
Please note that this is without running any applications. I just reboot
I tried upgrading to Karmic-RC overnight and completed the upgrade this
morning. Same hardware as originally posted, but nvidia driver updated to
versions 185, and obviously kernel was updated as well.
After less than 3 hours uptime, my machine crashed (black screen) with Xorg

Hi Timo,
Are you sure Bug 435011 and 439138 are duplicates?
The 439138 guys are saying that they can log out and back in as a
workaround, and that the 100% CPU power grab occurs just after the
initial log-in.

I didn't know if I should add a 'me too' to Bug# 434416 or file a new bug.
My symptoms are similar, but my hardware and drivers are different.
I have an AMD 64-bit, originally running Intrepid, then upgraded (not a clean
install) to Jaunty when
same here.
I just upgraded from breezy to dapper using apt-get. Webcalendar didn't make
it ...
Exact error report as above. I even tried remove/re-install but no improvement.
Cheers,
Dave

unreliable and GDM didn't work.
