Same problem here on my Asus EeePC 1015px on Ubuntu Mate 16.04.1.
After a clean O.S installation the speakers worked for few days, but today I
found that I got this issue also.
I can confirm that using headphones the sound is properly reproduced.
The operating system has all the updates available
This bug affects also Ubuntu 14.04, I tried to change my cursor theme to
a custom one and it is been displayed only in Firefox; moving the
pointer away from Firefox window, it reverts its theme to the previous
one.
