This was the problem that caused me to roll back to Zesty shortly after
Artful was released. I just redid the upgrade because of the EoL,
expecting that it surely would have been fixed in the meantime, but alas
not.
At least this time I could eventually find a bug and workaround :)

Public bug reported:
virt-manager has a handy little systray widget, and an option (which
seems to default off) in the preferences to enable it.
If you "quit" the main application window, the systray widget stays, and
can be used to send basic commands to VMs, or re-open the main screen.

I dispute that the problem is entirely within citrix; there are plenty of
other full screen programs broken by unity, no doubt with some issues on
each side.
That citrix has evidently found a work-around is nice, but just points to
the endless delays in this bug.

Public bug reported:
the package blurb describes the presence of C, python, and cli methods.
The cli programs are not installed (as executable, in a usable path) by
the package. They are buried.

I've given up on this being fixed. The only updates are it being pushed
back each version to next.

Also, I note the upstream debian bug was closed as fixed on Mon 23

(and there's also a new blender release since then, but that's a
separate matter)

This is important, because cycles is not just an optional enhancement.
It changes all the material properties in the model. In other words, the
content of blend files needs to be developed according to the renderer
(cycles or legacy) that will be used.
All new development, both of blender but also
Confirm the AppArmor messages; same here.

Tried briefly in 12.04 beta2 as of today. It has certainly improved.
Some notes:
* it now seems to obey window size preferences requests (e.g. 1024x768) set on
the server
* it makes an app window of this size, which can then be resized
* if this window is maximised (as opposed to full screen
