I think this error is caused by kernel misconfiguration and should be

Title:
Unbootable after upgrade to Lucid from Karmic - /d
In a virtual machine, a fresh install of Karmic 64-bit Desktop, with a modified
fstab, will boot after being upgraded to Lucid.
/etc/fstab DOES NOT have the /dev line...I was under the impression that it is
required since 10.04?

Uh, I freshly installed 10.10 a little while ago, after some hardware
upgrades. I'm installing Karmic in a VM, I'll check it out.
But if you can look at the upgrade script, you might just check if the
/dev line is added to /etc/fstab, especially in the case of user-
modified fstab.

Yeah, I made a mistake above, sorry.
The correct line for /etc/fstab is:
"dev /dev tmpfs rw 0 0"
i.e. with "tmpfs" instead of "devtmpfs"
Good luck, post again if it works or doesn't!

Had same issue (devices: The name org.freedesktop.DeviceKit.Power was not
provided by any .service files).
Deleting /var/lib/gdm/.ICEauthority allowed me to log in but doesn't preserve
display settings.
For me this issue began after installing the nvidia drivers for my new
gfx board.

Just got this as I attempted to use VLC.
I installed PulseAudio /today/. Karmic AMD64 with custom kernel, everything

I'm getting this error in Karmic. I should note that the error message
window actually pops up several times at once (so that one must click
"OK" several times) and that it does not affect network functionality
(obviously).
