This problem occurs with a USB modem device which contains a small
iso9660 filesystem as well. I can confirm that it was working with
Jaunty, but has not worked since.
Here's the relevant output from /var/log/messages:

I've seen exactly the same problem. When music is playing my load
average rises quickly, rendering the system unusable within about 10
minutes. Load averages above 7 are not unusual.

This seems to be a VMWare bug, caused by its inability to properly read
