For me the inconsistency is this: that maximised and unfocussed windows
at the fore of a monitor are determined to 'own' the panel, in that
clicking on the panel focuses it, but maximised and unfocussed windows
that aren't at the fore of a monitor do not own the panel and therefore
do not have any
Perhaps it's helpful to note that when the problem occurs the unity
panel also briefly drops it's theme (most obvious with the panel icons
for Empathy for example, if you've re-enabled them), but quickly
restores it, whereas Nautilus is not restored.

entirely unaffected, or only transiently affected (a couple of seconds),
by the problem, though a root instance of Opera still affects the user

Having just closed Opera and have this happen, gnome-settings-daemon is
still running. Issuing a 'nautilus -q' and opening a nautilus window
again brings everything back to normal.

Here's a thorough set of icons for the network manager and netstatus
applets based on my comments, and including animations for the
'connecting' phases for network manager. Of course these are suitable
for Humanity, Ambiance and Radiance.

OK, one problem here is that the applet icon does different jobs for
wired and wireless connections. In my opinion, the netstatus icon
should show transmit-receive information, whichever network type is
being monitored:

The Gnome NetStatus Applet uses these icons to show if data is being
sent or received. The Gnome Network Monitor does not use this idle icon
to show the wired connection status (it's distinct from
'networkwired.png'), which I think is your concern.

shadows, but that's not really an acceptable workaround.

closing. It's probably related to compiz. It's append after each update and i
need to restart
Same problem here, GeForce 7300 LE. The persistent shadow also
sometimes occurs with tooltip windows, and based on my experience, seems
to be a problem when the window disappears almost immediately after
being displayed.
