I have exactly the same problem as described above. Unfortunately, my
system does not update automatically, the version of the package
unattended-upgrades is 0.90.
Did you change something because you described that the package works
for some days?

I remove backports and alsa driver.
I reinstall linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.31-19-generic
Restart, still not working.
Uninstall linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.31-19-generic
Install linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.31-20-generic
Restart, still not working.

I also have the same problem with a ACER 8735G that as a internal
subwoofer.
I install linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic
restart
check all ouput volume with Gnome ALSA mixer
There is no output for subwoofer.
playback sound, nothing for the subwoofer
I install linux-alsa-driver-modules-2
