I've copied latest linux-firmware (a few days ago 20210919) and my setup
has improved. I believe more patches on latest one have reduced this
problem. I'll post more on the week when I confirm more.

Similar to what @iestynapmwg said, while upgrading from Ubuntu 20.10 to

On Ubuntu 20.04 the problem is still happening pretty similar to the one
reported by the OP. I've found a new way to fix it though.
Steps to reproduce:
1. turn off machine.
2. leave a headphone plugged in

I didn't need to patch the file /usr/share/initramfs-
tools/hooks/plymouth adding "spinner" there. I've noted though that
adding more themes I see the related file

the 'sudo openconnect xxx' command is adding to the file
/run/resolvconf/resolv.conf file the DNS IP addresses as global ones.

After suspend/resume the wifi network comes back, but the DNS doesn't
work. I've tried to ping a known IP and it works ok though.
My normal solution is to restart the network totally (haven't found a
smaller way to fix the skewed DNS server locally):
sudo systemctl restart n
Another note, this bug didn't happen to me on Ubuntu 16.04. Maybe it
should be reported separately for each version of Ubuntu?

and closing lid, the system is not suspending. It only blocks the

When upgrading the kernel I've experienced a similar bug (I'm using
stock-kernel). My headphones don't output any sound. It's fixed kind-of-
permanently (until next upgrade) if I run similar commands to #7 and
restart.
I take out the headphones then run:
rm -rf ~/.config/pulse/ && pulseaudio -k &
Just tested with kernel 4.4.0-31-generic. Still looking good on XPS 15
9550!

component that might be producing this same error.

I could not reproduce on a new machine this bug (though this

suggested turning off Secure Boot on Dell XPS 15 9550)

I could install i8kutils by forcing the load of kernel module:
sudo modprobe i8k force=1
Also for restarting I've added an option to the module:
sudo su
echo options i8k force=1 > /etc/modprobe.d/i8k.conf

Scratch my last comment. I'll add some screenshots with the issue
(hovering the mouse on top of unrendered text shows it temporarily).
After that I'll try to bump my kernel, but will need some days of
testing to reproduce problem

I've been suspending and restoring the session and not being to
reproduce with my actual Kernel (4.4.0-22-generic). I'm tempted to close
this issue

Original problem shows some letters and some other doesn't. I couldn't
read anything from the Gnome interface, i've attached another screenshot
