As a suggestion from a post on ubuntuforums.org, I decided to boot into some
older kernels i had. Tested on 2.6.27-7 and 2.6.27-10, and in both, the
brightness worked. This rules out the ACPI, unless it loaded a different module
for those kernels.

This bug is 100% reproducible in small town Deland, Florida, USA. There are
about 5 computer stores that i know of and in the 4 I've been in, there is no
mention of Linux, let alone Ubuntu. This is extremely dangerous. One store even
