I had the same problem. i had installed Intrepid after reformatting my /
partition but still had /home left over from Fedora. I ended up with
high CPU usage. I reformatted again to Hardy and the problem was gone.
I've just followed the Upgrade process to go Intrepid and the problem
has come back.
I took the hardy deb for flashplugin-nonfree from the gnomefreak ppa, it
installed fine, and I can youtube to my heart's delight, but apt then
tells me there's an update (the version in backports) and tries to
update. I get the same "The Adobe Flash 9 download aborted with an http
404 error." error
Just updating here - the issue still occurs with Gutsy final; identical
symptoms.

I can confirm this - has been happening ever since my clean Tribe 4
install; but not on every boot. Sometimes sound will come up muted,
sometimes not. It came up muted on this boot. Attachments as requested.

Further: Disabling NAT in VMWare player seems to have fixed the issue.

[Gutsy] sleep.sh crashed with SIGSEGV in memmove
Can confirm this, partially. The latest update broke networking on my
machine also. Sound still works (although keeps getting set to muted on
each boot - a separate bug).
I can make networking work again by changing /etc/network/interfaces
