I still have the problem nowadays, so no update that have been released
since did provide a fix.
I have observed a few things though, it seems the the problem is not
gnome-panel itself but the clock-applet.
Sometimes the gnome-panel starts but I have a white rectangle at the place the

I followed the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace and use
the method described in "Already running programs" since the gnome-panel
crashes at login time it can only be started before opening a terminal
to launch GDB.

I got some new information about this bug.
First of all it does happen on more than one of my computers, it's not
an isolated problem, to be more precise, both computers have been
upgraded from a 9.10 distro.
I was able to start a terminal windows during the problem of the toolbar not
appearing

That a funny way to treat a problem ...
Nope it's not a question it's a fact, the gnome-session doesn't start correctly
at a 75% rate on my experience.

What can I say to be more clear ?
See the screen-shots for yourself, you can clearly see the applets not being
loaded in t

When you log in, on your desktop gnome-session should start and show :

But since I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 I have to quit or kill my X

Not sure if directly related, but I experienced too nasty trouble with
DHCP on 9.04.
culprit is AppArmor that is configured too stricly for the 'dhclient'
executable to run properly, even being root you can't obtain a working

I had to use the following workaroud :

Okay, the problem is maybe related to something else finally.
the .rules files are not in /etc/udev/rules.d/ as I first searched but
in /lib/udev/rules.d/ , that's the first thing, BUT on my computer Xorg
is now dog slow ! It was running fine with Ubuntu 8.10.

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: udev
the package udev_141-1_i386.deb misses its files in /etc/udev/rules.d/
In comparission with Ubuntu 8.10 package there should be at least 16
.rules files, one of the direct consequences is the lack of /dev/fb0
device necessary for X with intel boards
I had the problem as seen in the bug #269904 using a GeForce 8800GT, and
I still have it now that I have a GTX260.

Does everyone use Compiz here ?
I have the refresh problem on firefox while I'm NOT using compiz.
I use only the NVidia binary driver.
You should try to see if it changes something when desactivating the
desktop effects.
If the problem remains then it would mean something is very wrong in the
