I still have the problem with 3.0.0-17 and 3.0.0-18. I can read the
message "System will reboot now", then the screen goes Black, The laptop
lights are still on. Network switch goes into "offline".

I don't think the problem is in gnome-settings-daemon, but in the
kernel. The gnome-settings-daemon package is actually only a workaround.

As in #7, I already tested the system with Ubuntu Kernel 3.0.0-12 and
3.0.0-13. Yesterday I tested the reboot with 3 mainline kernel, and here
the results.
The Problem persists with the following mainline kernel (system halts,
display is black, but no reboot):

So, I'd like to say, that I have exactly the same Problem. Using an HP
Compac Mini 702EG. Reboot just hangs (dark screen, but laptop still run.
Only form to go further is to push the power button for over 5 seconds).
On 10.04, 10.10 and 11.04 reboot just worked fine. Tried Kernel 3.0.0-12
and 3.0.0
I have a HP Compac mini 702EG with an Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME
Express Integrated Graphics Controller. I have also the problem since
11.10 (with 11.04 there was no error).
I tried the patched kernel from comment #26, #27 and #28, and it seems
