Just popped in to check status. I haven't moved any closer to a real
solution, unfortunately. I hadn't noticed that larger images would be
cropped - sorry about that. I did vote on the bug, though. Perhaps
next time I check in, I'll have better news.

I use both Ubuntu and OSX, found that right-clicking on the image in
LibreOffice (in OSX) and selecting "Save Graphics" allows one to choose
another format.
I know, I know. What would be really useful is if I helped with a fix
for *Ubuntu* - but I have a deadline, and needed a workaround today

Everything seems to be working fine. Can boot into both Windows 7 and
Ubuntu. A side-by-side diff showed this GRUB_TIMEOUT=10 vs.
GRUB_TIMEOUT="10". Update manager seems content.

This occurred to me on a brand-new Acer Aspire One 532h-2964, which came
with Windows 7 Starter. I installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 and chose
default partitioning. Dual-booting worked as expected prior to this
