I am running 9.04, and as far as I can tell all my packages are up to
date (apt-get update and apt-get upgrade).

I just had this happen on my laptop as well (running Feisty Gusy Gibbion
alpha, herd 5). I was not trying to access smb shares -- my music is
stored locally -- but I did use SMB to copy that music from my old
laptop to my new laptop.
