The first attachment display_non_U was actually another copy of xorg.0.log. Perhaps you could re-attach the output of: sudo lshw -C display; lsb_release -a from the non-working machine. But according to the xorg files, we have some interesting kernels in use: 2.6.24-29-xen : no unity 2.6.

I have been advised in #ubuntu-desktop that in 11.10 the behaviour has been changed... In 11.10 Empathy does not need to be running at login, instead it brings you online without running empathy. If someone IMs you, and you click on the indicator *then* it runs empathy. I am very happy with this
