Unfortunately, I cannot reproduce because that machine was killed in a
lightning strike about 3 months ago. The replacement is running a new
install of 8.04 and does not have the same issues.
I have no objection to closing at all.

This is a fairly low priority issue since you can restart the TTY as
necessary, however I couldn't find any reference to it through Google or
the bug tracker here so I had to work out the work-around from scratch
after figuring out where inittab had gone.

It is *quite* annoying, not worth throwing the toys out of the pram for
