The version of Lubuntu is wily. This old laptop was upgrade from 14.04
which had a working display until I updated it recently.
The screenshot does not show how the display actually looks, if required

The 3.9 kernels work and the 3.10 kernels fail to boot.
In addition to the above kernels you listed, I tried the last 3.9 and
the first 3.10 based on the directory date listings at
